Irish Round Table

According to one recruiting service Notre Dame has the number one recruiting class in the land.  It’s amazing how this one article can make all the following quotes sound nonsensical:

Jay Marrioti, Dec 4, 2004:

At this point, a man would have to be very brave or very crazy to take the job. Charlie Weis, offensive coordinator of the New England Patriots, is a Notre Dame alum and is said to be interested. But when was the last time he recruited a kid in a living room?

Notre Dame, no matter the coach, is extremely unlikely to return to their days of national championship contention every year. You take a 5-star WR recruit and tell him, hey… you can party in Miami or Los Angeles and barely have to go to class, or you can go to fucking Indiana, which is awesome if you like cornfields and snow… and by the way, you’ll also have to carry some ungodly GPA. I know I’d be in LA.

They are no longer special.

Daily Utah Chronicle, Dec 1, 2004:

The Irish are not as great as they once were and they lose recruits to schools such as USC and Miami every single year. Why?

Academic standards, location and lack of pro players coming out of the school.

Black Alumni of Notre Dame, Dec 7, 2004:

the recent firing of football coach Tyrone Willingham will hamper the school’s efforts to recruit and retain black students and teachers.

Coach Dit-ka, Sep 4, 2005:

“That’s a program that has been struggling for years,” Ditka said. “It depends on whose eyes you’re looking through, but they’ve kind of fallen on hard times. They could get anybody they wanted in the old days. If Notre Dame came calling, you went.

“That’s not true anymore. There’s too much competition out there.”

Dennis Dodd:

Don’t even get me started about the lack of skill players.

Notre Dame needs the media more than the media needs Notre Dame.

Stewrat, Dec. 3, 2004:

Notre Dame is finding out the hard way that Knute Rockne and the Four Horsemen don’t have nearly the kind of pull they once did. … It sure would be great to be part of that tradition, but if I want to win, I should probably stay where I am. … In light of what happened to Tyrone Willingham, no accomplished coach in his right mind would take a look at Notre Dame and conclude going there to be anything other than career suicide.
