File Him Under ‘IRISH’

This one is huge.  Here’s the story from The Sun Times:

Notre Dame’s football recruiting class, already ranked No. 1 in the nation, added its eighth top- 100 prospect Monday when linebacker Steve Filer of Mount Carmel made an oral commitment to Irish coach Charlie Weis.

Filer, a 6-4, 225-pounder, chose Notre Dame over Ohio State. He had 37 scholarship offers. He joins two other Chicago- area products, St. Rita defensive end Darius Fleming and Marian Central defensive tackle Sean Cwynar, on what recruiting analyst Tom Lemming of CSTV describes as the most talented incoming group in the country.

”In the beginning, Notre Dame wasn’t at the top of my list. I liked Ohio State and Michigan,” Filer said. ”But I got a good feeling for the players and coaches. In the end, I felt Notre Dame was the best move for me and my family. It is close to home and it will give me a good education.”

Filer was the first name on recruitniks lists as a possible Notre Dame recruit for the 2008 class even before last year’s National Signing Day.  What’s not to love about this kid?  He’s fast, he’s big, he’s nasty, and best of all he’s from Chicago so you know he’s a bad ass.

Rivals has Filer as the second best linebacker in the country and the 34th overall rated prospect.  In other words, he’s the best defensive recruit the Irish have landed since Victor Abiamiri in the 2003 class.
