Optimism
It is starting to creep in. We received this e-mail from an IRT reader this week:
I just looked at our schedule.
And we could be 11-0 heading into USC!
SDSU, UW, Stanford, Cuse, NC, Navy, and Pitt should all be W’s
That leaves, @MSU, Purdue, and BC. We can win each of these games.
The only hurdle is UM…new coach, new RB, new QB, …still bad D?
08 could be HUUUUUUUUUUUGEEEEE.
And we have a winning streak heading into the season.
Notre Dame -09 National Champs!
Gotta love the optimism. 3-9 to National Champs. Hey, you have to start somewhere.

I will be fine with 1-0 going into Michigan. Although watching ESPN and all the other members of the media who love to bash ND/Weis/Clausen when they are down, switch to praising Clausen for his poise, Weis for his offensive genius and ND for its, well, ND-ness will be delicious as ND climbs the polls.
Here’s to optimism, 11-0 going into USC, and being Irish!!!!

Irish 6053, I cannot believe you are taking the approach that our schedule next year is deserving of being bashed. Playing a friendlier schedule that provides the opportunity to win more games is exactly what our young team needs. Look at some of the teams playing in the BCS Bowls, and they got there by not playing a top 20 team every Saturday. We were burned this season because we were woefully inexperienced, played a schedule that was full of teams loaded with upperclassmen, and had errors in coaching. In 2008, we will still be a young team, but at least the schedule is more in our favor. JVH is correct is saying that even with a better schedule, nothing is definite. I personally believe being 11-0 going into the USC game is very doubtful, but like every other Irish fan, I would love it.

Sure, here we go again. I remember folks posting that 8-3 would be about right for ND in 2007. What are you smoking–I want some too

Optimism is a good thing. Healthy. Optimists live longer than pessimists. They are happier.
When the preseason predictions come in, there will be a fair amount of people who will pick 10 or more wins. I am hoping they are right.

Bob Lawrence got it right. People are already clammoring about how we should tear through the schedule with no more than 2 losses next year. But wait and see, if we struggle to win 6 games those same people will say we were crazy to expect anything more. Just like this year.

Playing a cream puff schedule is not how ND attained and maintained national prominence. It certainly will not be how we return to it. One of the unforeseen consequences of 3-9 is the deep hole that it puts us in – or rather, how we got to 3-9 and how unbelievably bad we looked. With a schedule like this following a year like that – we could be 10-2 (fat chance) and barely make the top 25. Think not? Look at the success of our b-ball team – a regular top 10 or 15 team in the 70s – with outstanding records recently against often weak non-con opposition. They’ve been barely a blip in terms of national consideration.
