Goodwill
Last week I sat down with two long-time IRT readers and Notre Dame alums for lunch to talk about the state of ND football. The conversation turned to Weis and how he needs to handle himself over the next few weeks/months as he moves on from Notre Dame. We came to the conclusion that the longer Weis sticks around and the more he says, the more we will come to dislike him.
That is not to say we dislike him now. It is more to the point that he needs to tread carefully.
Weis needs to be careful how he leaves and what he says as he leaves the program that has consistently underperformed over the last 4 years(we’ll give him the first year.) Notre Dame fans have great memories and recall to this day how Davie and Willingham left the program.
Willingham will never be forgiven by Notre Dame Nation for the interview he gave to John Sanders after Ty was terminated. That interview now seems even more foolish, ridiculous, and laughable after Willingham ran Washington’s program right into Puget Sound.
Weis still has some goodwill at Notre Dame. Fans realize he worked his ass off, recruited well, and “got” the University. After all, he’s one of their own. How he leaves his post will seal how fans view him years from now. It would be very prudent of him to keep quiet, acknowledge his failures, and move on. There is no need to blame the school, blame the fans, or blame the players.
The more he talks, the more goodwill he will extinguish.
