Thoughts on Next Coach, Stoops

I have been asked recently whether I thought Stoops would be the next coach at Notre Dame. Here’s my answer: I don’t know.

All of the posts on this site recently have been regurgitated rumors from all over the internet. By centralizing all the big rumors, we have a nice database and history of the process to look back on and plenty to discuss. All the rumors have been based off of people I do not know. If I ever hear from one of my contacts at ND(basically, the south dining hall crew(Hooray!)) I’ll post what I hear.

I am not sure if Stoops will be the next coach. I have not crossed him off the list though. And I haven’t crossed Gruden off the list either. About the only guy I have crossed off is Dungy although I’m not sure he was on anyone’s shortlist to start with.

On Stoops and Gruden: Sign me up.

On Kelly: I think he would be a fantastic hire. He has a better resume at this juncture than Meyer had 5 years ago coming out of Utah. Cincy’s defense is fine. They lost 10 starters this year and still have only allowed more than 20 points in only 2 games this year. Cincy’s schedule is fine. They have beaten the likes of Syracuse, UConn, and Pitt with 2 and 3 star players. Imagine what he could do with Notre Dame’s kids.

On Meyer: I think he is the greatest coach on the planet, but I don’t want him. He had his chance. I can get into this more in another post.

On Harbaugh and Fitzgerald: Both of these guys have said some things in the past that make me think they don’t belong at ND. Besides, Harbaugh is a Michigan man. Forget that. Notre Dame has no place for a Michigan head coach(sorry, Corwin.)

On Butch Davis and Paul Johnson: Not very fired up with these guys. More of a gut feel.

On Ditka: Regular sized Ditka, no. Mini-Ditka, yes.

This process has a long way to go. I’ll continue to post the different rumors floating around the interwebs. Eventually one of them will turn out to be true.

I really like the Paul Johnson angle. He’s not my top pick, but I’d put him above Brian Kelly. He’s got an offensive style that wins ball games, and could win in South Bend. Control the ball, let the big uglies pop the defense in the mouth, then line it up and do it again. I know less about his defense, but he must have been doing something right when Georgia Tech headed into this past weekend ranked #7.
