Florida Has a Boatload of Defensive Ends

Florida’s 2007 recruiting class has five defensive ends:

Justin Trattou

Duke Lennmens

Jerry Howard

Carlos Dunlop

Sidell Corley

One of those ends, Justin Trattou, dropped a bomb on the Irish two weeks before National Signing Day by committing to Florida. Here’s why:

“In a 3-4, they[Notre Dame] would want me to play rush end or outside linebacker, and while that’s tempting, that’s not really where I see myself,” Trattou said. “I’ve always been a down lineman and that’s what I prefer. At the end of the day, that makes a big difference.”

So what defense does Florida plan on playing? A 5-2? Maybe a 6-1? How about a 7-0? That’s the only way all these ends will see the field any time soon.

[...] IRT takes a look at Florida’s container-ship worth of defensive end prospects and wonders if Urb plans to run a gadget defense along with his gadget offense I like to call “Timmy! Special!”. That’s right, Timmy. You are special. [...]

Actually, Sidell Corley, who “sort of” committed early this year, is not going to Florida. And Jerry Howard is listed as a commit, but isn’t committed at all to UF and doesn’t even have it as his “most likely” school. So make him the third recruit at the position. And with one starter returning at defensive end and little returning depth on the defensive line, all recruits could be playing at the same time — and it could be in fall 2007.

[...] The BCS computer actually broke down after number 6. Speaking with a technician, I leaned that the poor computer fell into an infinite loop when the possibility of a Florida DL recruit entered the equation. [...]
